Ratio: 1 instructor to 6 participants (maximum)


Our Map Reading & Navigation Courses are perfect if you want to learn or improve your map reading and compass skills. You will learn to navigate safely in mountain or lowland environments. We will give you the tools and confidence you need to plan and enjoy your own hiking adventures.

All our Map Reading & Navigation Courses take place in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park.

Beginners Map Reading Course description

This course is ideal for those who have little or no navigation experience. You will learn to use a map and compass so you can confidently follow the right footpath and not get lost even in poor visibility.

You will learn:

- To identify and follow footpaths

- How to navigate in poor visibility

- Map symbols 

- Identifying large and small features on a map

- Orienting the map

- Taking and following a bearing 

- Interpreting contours 

- Basic handrailing techniques 

- Measuring timings (using Naysmiths rule)

- The Grid System and Grid References

Who is it for?

This is ideal for people with little or no map reading skills who want to learn to learn to follow footpaths with confidence.

What equipment do I need?

 

​We will be providing maps and compasses on the day but please feel free to bring your own.

 

We will send you a detailed kit list upon booking and again shortly before the event.

 

Normal hiking gear is needed and this varies a little depending on the time of year and the forecast on the day. Items that are always required which you may need to go out and buy include walking boots, a waterproof jacket and a rucksack. 

We can give you advice about what to buy if you have booked onto one of our walks.

Where does it start?

You will meet in the village or Rachub and the navigation course will take place in the stunning Carneddau mountains.
